Automobile production almost ceased during the war. Only a few cars and trucks had been made until 1942 mainly for the benefit of the Germans. A good example is the Citroen Traction; very appreciated by the Germans. The Lutwaffe as well as the Wermacht used them all other Europe, even on the Russian front, and some have been found in eastern Europe after the fall of Communism in 1989.
As soon as the war started gasoline/petrol was hard to find and was reserved for the occupation army.
Civilian populations had to find new ways for transportation, gazogenes reappeared, gaz, and acetylene were used. Horses too. (In 1944 a horse was more expensive than a car ), but the most successful means of transportation in that era was the bike.
